The porcupine's 30,000 quills are its last line of defense.  They would rather climb trees and make strange sounds than fight.  Porcupines are found throughout most of Alaska primarily in forested areas where they dine on plants and trees to satisfy their sweet tooth.  The quills of a porcupette (newborn porcupine) are soft during delivery and harden within a few hours of birth.
